I slowly turn, expecting to see a curious local, maybe even a ranger questioning why I’m here. What I don’t expect is the massive white bear standing at the edge of the tree line, completely still, eyes locked on mine.

We lock eyes, and for a moment—a weird, impossible moment—I feel like I’m being assessed, not hunted.
